Choosing the right pool deck material in Houston is not just an aesthetic decision — it's a comfort and safety decision. With summer temperatures regularly exceeding 100°F, the wrong deck material can make your pool area unusable during the hottest months of the year. Bare concrete in direct Houston sun can reach 140–160°F surface temperatures, causing burns on bare feet within seconds.
This guide compares the five most common pool deck materials used in Houston — ranked by their performance in our climate — with real cost ranges, honest pros and cons, and our recommendation for each budget level. If you're planning a full pool remodel or new pool construction, deck selection is one of the first decisions we'll walk you through during your free consultation.
"The deck material is one of the most impactful decisions in a pool build. It affects how the space feels, how it wears, and how much you'll spend maintaining it over 20 years."

| Material | Heat Performance | Slip Resistance | Durability | Cost / Sq Ft | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travertine | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | ★★★★★ | $18–$30 | Low |
| Kool Deck Coating | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★☆ | ★★★☆☆ | $4–$8 | Medium |
| Concrete Pavers | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★☆ | ★★★★☆ | $12–$22 | Low |
| Stamped Concrete | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | $6–$14 | Medium |
| Porcelain Tile | ★★★★☆ | ★★★☆☆ | ★★★★★ | $20–$40 | Low |

For most of our clients, we recommend travertine pavers as the primary deck material. The upfront cost premium over concrete pays for itself in comfort, longevity, and the ability to replace individual pavers rather than repour an entire slab.
For clients with tighter budgets, a broom-finish concrete base with a Kool Deck coating is our recommended alternative — it performs significantly better in Houston's heat than bare concrete and can always be upgraded to pavers in a future renovation.
We do not recommend bare stamped concrete as a standalone deck material in Houston without a heat-reducing coating. The surface temperature risk is too high for comfortable barefoot use during summer months.
At Rhino Pool Pros, we walk every client through material selection during the design consultation — bringing samples, discussing long-term costs, and helping you make the decision that's right for your yard and your budget.
